UK's Creative Industries Get a £380M Boost

The UK government has made a game-changing announcement for freelancers with its new Creative Industries Sector Plan, backed by £380 million in funding. Most significantly for our community, they're appointing a dedicated Creative Freelance Champion.

Matthew Dowling, Founder of Freelancer Club and Chair of the Creative Self-Employed Working Group, called this "a significant step forward" after years of advocacy. As he noted, this marks the government formally committing to support the sector's freelance workforce - with 28% of creative workers being self-employed.

The plan aims to nearly double business investment in creative industries from £17 billion to £31 billion by 2035. Key highlights include £150 million for creative businesses outside London, 2,000 new apprenticeships through the National Film and Television School, and enhanced support from the British Business Bank.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy positioned creative industries as "powerful economic drivers" for regional growth, finally recognizing freelancers as essential to Britain's economic future.

For freelancers who've long felt overlooked in policy discussions, this represents a significant step toward better representation and meaningful support.
